SHUFFLE, SHUFFLE

A pair of quick amendments - my debut collection of poetry, Plum Stuff, will be published by 8th House Publishing in the spring of 2010, as opposed to the summer, as I'd mentioned; and my second (formerly first) collection, Mavor's Bones, will appear in the latter part of 2010, from Vox Humana. Looks a busy year.

PLUM STUFF - OLD STUFF - A SCIENTIFIC DREAM

Pleased to announce, loudly and often, the upcoming release of my second book of verse. It's called Plum Stuff (I have no idea why), and will be published by 8th House Publishing, of Montreal, next summer. Fully illustrated, too - by the author.

Surprised to find a half-dozen tremendously early poems of mine in Jerry Jazz Musician. Forgot clean about 'em.

Not a very scientific person, but late last night had a Scientific Dream - that space-time had become worn out in various places, from heavy objects - stars and planets, etc. - living and dying, over eons, in the same approximate spots. So the universe started ripping apart, and everybody wondered whether it would end up in several big, stable pieces, or roll up like a wall-map. Also, you could bounce on the wobbly space-time patches, like a trampoline, right to the "ceiling" of the universe. Not very scientific, I suppose.

Look for new stories, poems, and artworks in future issues of Quarterly West, Labletter, Highlights for Children, sub-TERRAIN, Transition, Stickman Review, Wascana Review, Ladybug, The Egregious, and others.

Also, I’ve discovered 12 new galaxies (see illustration, above).

TWO AND TWO NEW IN TNQ

A pair of new Rolli poems – “Charles, You Are a Peach of a Man,” and “Aunt Gray, Octavius and I” – alongside two new drawings, can be found in the new issue, No. 111, of The New Quarterly. To receive an autographed copy (and free mystery gift), just click the pic.

A brief history of the poems, to satisfy the curiosity of a few who’ve asked, and indulge myself, a little. “Aunt Gray” was written, in quite literal fits, from the 22nd to the 25th of August, 2008. “Charles” was done in one go, a few months later, on the 25th of November. It was one of a trilogy of self-deprecating poems (the others – “Charles, You Man of Marble,” and “Charles, It’s Sudden, It’s” have never been printed).

“Charles” was declined first by A Public Space, then The Believer, The Freshwater Poetry Contest, dANDelion, Ninth Letter, Hollins Critic and The Edinburgh Review before being accepted by The New Quarterly.

“Aunt Gray” was rejected by Queen’s Quarterly, Prairie Fire, The Literary Review of Canada and The Boston Review before finding its present home.

I find myself interested, more and more, in how and when something was written, and came to be published – though it’s something writers seldom talk about - than the piece itself. The story of the former, alone, seldom disappoints.

NEW STUFF

A few things, today –

First off, I’m more than happy to announce that Vox Humana will bring out my first book of poetry, Mavor’s Bones, in the spring of 2010. Much of the book was written under hypnosis (incidentally, I no longer bite my fingernails), so I’m curious to see how people will react to it.

Second, a podcast of my short story “Doris” goes live today at Bound Off.

“Preparing the Eulogy,” a recent prose poem + drawing can be found in the new Writer’s Eye.

Keep an eye out, too, in the near future, for poems in sub-TERRAIN, The Egregious, The Wascana Review, and others.

Coming soon – another big announcement!
